Electrical Panel Upgrade in Spring Hill, FL

Electrical Panel Upgrades

Your electrical panel is the backbone of every circuit in your home. When it can't keep up — whether it's an undersized 100-amp service, a panel with a documented safety history, or a breaker box that trips every time you run two appliances at once — everything downstream suffers. More importantly, an overloaded or failing panel is one of the leading causes of residential electrical fires.

Faulkner Electric has been upgrading electrical panels throughout Spring Hill and West Central Florida for over 50 years. We handle the assessment, the permit, the utility coordination, and the inspection—so you get a modern, code-compliant panel without the hassle of figuring it out yourself.

Signs You Need An Electrical Panel Upgrade

Your panel is telling you something when any of these are happening:

  • Breakers that trip frequently — especially when running multiple appliances simultaneously
  • Lights that flicker or dim when large appliances kick on
  • A burning smell or warmth near the panel or outlets
  • Breakers that won't reset or hold their position
  • A 100-amp service in a home with modern electrical demands
  • A Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or Pushmatic panel—these have documented safety issues (more on this below)
  • No room to add circuits for a new EV charger, generator, hot tub, or home addition
  • An insurance company flagging your panel as a condition of coverage

If any of these apply to your home, call us at (727) 301-7996. We'll assess the panel and give you a clear picture of what you're working with.

Federal Pacific, Zinsco, and Pushmatic Panels: What You Need To Know

If your home was built between the 1950s and 1980s, it likely has one of these panels—and if so, replacement is urgent.

Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip under overload conditions. A breaker that doesn't trip when it should allows wiring to overheat unchecked—which is how electrical fires start. Consumer safety organizations have flagged FPE panels for decades, and many insurance companies in Florida will not write a homeowner's policy on a home with one.

Zinsco and Sylvania panels have a similar failure pattern—breakers that weld to the bus bar and lose the ability to trip. Like FPE, they are widely flagged by insurers and should be replaced.

Pushmatic panels don't have the same fire history as FPE or Zinsco, but they use a push-button breaker design that is no longer supported, parts are unavailable, and the design is not compatible with today's electrical loads.

If you have any of these panels, contact your homeowner's insurance carrier and then call us. The sooner it's replaced, the better.

100-Amp vs. 200-Amp vs. 400-Amp Service: What Does Your Home Need?

100-amp service was the standard for decades and is still adequate for smaller, older homes with modest electrical loads — basic lighting, a few appliances, no central air. For most modern Florida homes, 100 amps is not enough.

200-amp service is the current standard for most residential properties and handles the full load of a modern home — central HVAC, kitchen appliances, washer/dryer, electronics, and the additional circuits needed for an EV charger, generator transfer switch, or hot tub. If you're on 100 amps and adding anything significant, 200 is where you need to be.

400-amp service is appropriate for large homes, homes with multiple HVAC systems, or properties with significant electrical demands like workshop equipment, multiple EV chargers, or whole-home generators. We assess your current and projected load and recommend the right service size for your situation.

What A Panel Upgrade Includes

Every Faulkner Electric panel upgrade covers:

  • Full panel assessment — We evaluate your current panel, service size, and total electrical load before recommending a replacement

  • New breaker panel installation — Code-compliant, properly sized for your home's current and future needs

  • Circuit transfer — All existing circuits moved to the new panel cleanly and correctly labeled

  • Main service upgrade if needed — Upgrading from 100-amp to 200-amp service includes new service entrance conductors and meter base work

  • Utility coordination — We work with your utility provider (Withlacoochee River Electric Co-op, Duke Energy, or TECO) to schedule the service shutoff and reconnection

  • Permit filing — Florida requires a permit for panel upgrades; we handle the filing and coordinate the inspection

  • Final inspection — We schedule and pass the required electrical inspection so the job is fully documented and code-compliant

The Panel Upgrade Process

1. Free assessment and quote. We inspect your current panel, evaluate your load, and give you a clear upfront estimate. If you have a Federal Pacific, Zinsco, or other flagged panel, we'll document it in writing—useful for insurance conversations.

2. Permit filing. We submit the electrical permit to your local building department before work begins. No surprises, no shortcuts.

3. Installation day. We coordinate the utility shutoff window, swap the panel, transfer all circuits, and restore power—typically within a single day. There will be a planned outage during the swap, and we give you a realistic timeline upfront.

4. Inspection and sign-off. We schedule the required electrical inspection and make sure everything passes. You receive a fully permitted, inspected, code-compliant panel upgrade.

Panel Upgrades and Your Homeowner's Insurance

This is a conversation more Spring Hill homeowners need to have with their insurance agent. Florida insurers have become increasingly strict about older electrical panels—particularly Federal Pacific and Zinsco. Common scenarios:

  • Your insurer requires replacement as a condition of continuing coverage

  • Your premium increases significantly because of a flagged panel

  • A new insurer declines to write a policy on your home until the panel is replaced

  • A home sale falls through because the buyer's lender requires remediation

A panel upgrade resolves all of these. If your insurer has flagged your panel or you're preparing to sell, call us at (727) 301-7996 — we can typically turn a quote around quickly and get you on the schedule.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • How do I know if I need a panel upgrade?

Common signs include frequently tripping breakers, flickering lights, a burning smell near the panel, an older 100-amp service, a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, or plans to add high-draw circuits like an EV charger, generator, or hot tub. If you're unsure, we'll assess it during a free estimate.

  • How long does a panel upgrade take?

Most residential panel upgrades are completed in one day. There is a planned power outage while the panel is swapped — typically a few hours. We coordinate the utility shutoff and restore power before we leave.

  • Is a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel actually dangerous?

Yes. Both have documented breaker failure rates — specifically, breakers that don't trip under overload conditions. That allows wiring to overheat unchecked, which is a primary cause of electrical fires. Most Florida insurers will not cover homes with these panels or require replacement as a condition of coverage.

  • Do I need a permit for a panel upgrade in Florida?

Yes. Electrical panel upgrades require a permit in Florida. Faulkner Electric handles all permit filing, utility coordination, and inspection scheduling from start to finish.

  • Will my homeowner's insurance pay for a panel upgrade?

Standard policies don't cover panel upgrades as routine maintenance. However, if your insurer has flagged your panel as a coverage condition, contact us — we can provide documentation and get you on the schedule quickly.

  • Can I add an EV charger or generator to my existing 100-amp panel?

Possibly, depending on your current load — but in most cases a 100-amp panel doesn't have the capacity headroom to safely add an EV charger or whole-home generator. We assess this during your free estimate and quote the panel upgrade and the new circuit together if needed.

  • How much does a panel upgrade cost in Spring Hill?

Cost depends on your current service size, the new service size needed, and whether any service entrance work is required. Call us at (727) 301-7996 for a free upfront estimate.
